Is there a guarantee for an iPhone imported by parallel import, how much do they cost and is it worth buying them

Permission to parallel import, when products are imported into the country without the consent of the copyright holder, has been in force in Russia for several months. However, Apple equipment under this scheme began to be imported only now. Retailers were afraid that the company would trace large batches of its devices imported into the Russian Federation in circumvention of the rules, and simply block them. But, as they say, hunger is not an aunt, and the accumulated stocks of iPhones gradually began to run out, and Russian retail finally decided on the parallel import of apple technology. Another question is whether it is worth buying.

Many mistakenly call parallel import unofficial, equating it to gray. However, such an import model, firstly, is quite official, because it is approved by the government. And, secondly, it doesn’t even look like gray, because it involves certification of imported devices, warranty service and even non-warranty repairs, as required by law.

iPhone Parallel Import – Where to Buy

For today iPhones imported by parallel import, are sold at once in several retail chains. This, by the way, is another difference from gray: “parallel” iPhones are available only in large stores. They must be marked accordingly so that the consumer understands what he is dealing with. At the moment, I managed to find such iPhones in Svyaznoy, M.Video and Eldorado.

Svyaznoy calls the “parallel” iPhone versions for other countries, placing a plate on the product card with the reasons for selling such a device in Russia. It says that the smartphone has PCT certification and completely legal.

M.Video uses a different designation – “Seller’s Warranty“. The retailer does not write about the grounds for importing goods into the country, but instead focuses on the fact that he provides a guarantee for the goods. If you click on this box, you will be redirected to a description of the terms of the warranty service, which are quite remarkable.

Indeed, parallel import assumes that the sellers themselves undertake the maintenance of imported devices. Therefore, M.Video claims that – if something happens – it will service your iPhones on one’s own. Another question is how, with what and on what grounds? After all, it is possible that it will be more profitable to repair the iPhone in the Apple Pro service center.

Parallel import guarantee

Okay, let’s say spare parts for iPhone and other Apple electronics will also be brought to Russia by parallel import, having purchased them somewhere in Armenia, Kazakhstan or Tajikistan. But where will M.Video get the necessary equipment for repair, calibration and other manipulations that a certified repair involves? I’m not talking about how and where M.Video will train its employees to repair new devices.

We asked these questions to representatives of the trading network, but did not receive an answer. It is possible that they themselves do not yet know how to answer them, otherwise they would not have ignored our request.

According to one version, Russian retailers will not repair Apple equipment at all, as it was before. If you remember, a few years ago, authorized service centers of the company did not change most of the components, but simply replaced damaged iPhones with new ones. But then Apple organized a full-cycle repair production in Russia, and then they began to change almost any details.

This theory is indirectly supported by the price of iPhones imported into the Russian Federation by parallel imports. No, just look at how much our retailers sell them for:

  • iPhone 13 128 GB – 86,990 rubles
  • iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB – 131,990 rubles
  • iPhone 13 Pro 256 GB – 141,990 rubles
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max 128 GB – 157,990 rubles
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max 256 GB – 181,990 rubles

Which iPhone to buy in 2022

Prices for “parallel” iPhone, frankly, extortionate. Especially given the current exchange rate of the dollar and the euro against the dollar. It is clear that retailers bear a lot of expenses for the organization of purchases, logistics and service. But with a direct translation of European prices (previously they were equated to Russian prices approximately in a ratio of 1 to 1), something should be obtained about 48 thousand rubles per iPhone 13 and about 60 thousand for the iPhone 13 Pro. In fact, as we can see, the prices differ by about two times.

On Yandex Market – more realistic prices for iPhone in Russia. Here, see for yourself:

All this – gray iPhones, which small shops carry directly from abroad. Unlike parallel imports, they simply buy them in regular retail, and then return VAT under the program Tax Free. As a result, the price is the most favorable. Is that the sellers themselves are not responsible for warranty service. But are you sure that the overpayment for “parallel” iPhones is worth it? Personally, I’m not sure.

Learn more about Apple device repair

For me, it is more logical and economical to buy gray iPhone, rather than a parallel-imported one. There are at least two reasons for this. Firstly, Gray iPhones cost at least half the price, and it may not need repairs. And, secondly, if something happens, you can contact the Apple Pro service center for service. These are our friends, so you don’t have to worry about the quality of the repair. The guys use original components, and their prices are often lower than those of competitors. So you can save twice and not lose anything.
