iPhone 13 Pro Max experience. It has not only advantages

Is it convenient to use the new iPhone

What is certain to me like in the last two generations of iPhone, is how they feel in the hands. It immediately feels that the smartphone is expensive and premium. Even though I have always preferred smaller models and have used the iPhone 12 Pro before, I have a lot of respect for the new flagship king.

It makes no sense to talk in detail about the iPhone 13 Pro. I wrote a separate article about it when it came out, and now we will not dwell on it in detail, since by and large it differs from Pro Max only in screen size and battery capacity.

True, here I can put a small plus for the iPhone 13 Pro Max in comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro because of its balance. I already talked about this in the first impression of the device. Due to the fact that the camera module has greatly increased, it looks just huge on a more compact body. But on a large body, it looks very harmonious. In comparison with this, it even seems that last year it was not big enough, but now it has become what it should be.

I would not like it to grow further, but now there are times when developing a camera using software is quite difficult and you have to work with physics. That is, to increase the size of the matrix and improve optical schemes. All this may indicate that the camera will continue to increase. It would seem, where else, but remember how we all resented protruding iPhone 6 camera. Only now it becomes clear how we then exaggerated the essence of the problem.

Has the notch on the iPhone gotten smaller?

One of the important features of the new phone compared to last year was its new bangs. At the presentation, Apple said that it has become smaller, and this is really true. It’s just that it’s not of much use. From the very beginning, I noted that if you do not know about its real decrease, it may not even be evident. It is still there, but a little more or a little less is not so important. Therefore, I can say for sure that if you thought about changing your phone just because of the bangs, you better discard this idea. As now we forget about it after an hour of use, so it will continue. Well and if you specifically pay attention to itthen she will still be there.

The camera of the new iPhone

As is usually the case, many innovations have touched the camera. In particular, the camera received a macro mode. Now it can focus at a distance of just a few centimeters. I have always been against macro modules in Android smartphones, which talked a lot about it at the presentation, showing beautiful pictures.

My dissatisfaction was caused by the fact that a separate module was allocated for the macro, which was needed more in order to say that this phone has 4 or even 5 cameras. But the module had a maximum resolution of 2 megapixels and frankly shot so-so. In the case of the iPhone, the main ultra-wide-angle module is sharpened for this. He really makes high-quality, not marketing macro shots. And you can shoot video on it, but you need to understand that the shadow from the phone greatly obscures the light. Therefore, you need to shoot with separate lighting or just on the street.

The camera itself is excellent. Large sensor combined with dual stabilization (on the sensor and not on the optics) allows you to get smoother videos and less blurry photos. Even the automatic night mode felt like it turned on later. Therefore, on the iPhone, you can now take even better photos. That’s just this does not apply to the front camera. So far, the problem of dynamic range has not gone away. If you shoot yourself against the background of a cloudy sky, then with a high degree of probability it will be overexposed. And if there are bright light sources behind you, then with a high degree of probability your face will be underexposed. Something needs to be done about this, but apparently not this time.

The original photos can be downloaded from this link to see how the camera of this phone shoots.

How cinematic mode works in iPhone

But everything turned out with the “Cinema Effect” mode. You can see how it works in the video posted above, and if you say it in words, that is, where to strive, but the start is not bad.

Initially, the video is shot with a large depth of field, and the background is blurred programmatically, understanding how far the object is from the camera and how much automation does so that the rest is blurred. Due to the programmatic nature of the blur, it can be changed even after shooting, but only if the video is small. If more than 7-10 minutes are filmed, then problems may begin. Apparently, this is due to the fact that the video needs to be processed for a long time under the changed focus.

You can even change the strength of the blur, as if you widened the aperture on the camera. But sometimes there are mistakes. For example, I shot a swaying flower and its stem was blurry and the edges of the petals were jagged. With people and less angular objects, there is no such problem. This is what I meant above when I said that the regime has room to develop. In any case, you can be sure that other manufacturers have already thought about how to copy it.

Screen of the new iPhone

I also liked the use of a refresh rate of 120 Hz in the screen. Let now Android fans condescendingly nod their heads, because smartphones on this OS have had this opportunity for several years, but everything is not so simple.

iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max can adjust refresh rate 10 to 120 Hz. Such a large range is not available to other devices. It turns out that if you watch videos on YouTube at a frequency of 30 frames per second, the conditional Samsung will still update the screen one and a half to two times more often, but the iPhone will not. If you are reading, then the iPhone will recalculate the picture at all 10 times per second, unlike 45-60 times for other smartphones. And I’m talking about devices with adaptive refresh rates, which are not so many. The rest will simply thresh 120 frames per second, even static pictures, which means they will drain the battery faster.

How long does a new iPhone charge?

The battery itself began to work for a really long time. Before that, I used the iPhone 12 Pro on a regular basis, but I dealt with its Max version and I remember how much longer it worked. Now the autonomy of the phone seems to be simply endless. By the end of the day, with fairly active use, I rarely had less than 40%. That is, if you use it from time to time, then you can safely talk about two days of autonomy.

Probably the main oddity that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has is that the company has not abandoned Lightning. It’s a great connector that I really like, but it’s USB 2.0 with its very slow transfer speeds. This begs a very logical question. What to do with videos shot in ProRes, one minute of which takes up several gigabytes of phone memory. On such a wire, it will be transmitted for eternity. There is no answer to this.

iPhone 13 Pro Max video review

In the video above, I told a few more pros and cons of this phone, but here I tried to write as concisely as possible about what I paid attention to. This is solely my opinion, which cannot be considered absolute truth. And the article itself is not a review, of which there have already been many. Including on our website. Therefore, the next enumeration of characteristics would be just a waste of time.

If you already have such a phone, tell us what you think of it. And most importantly, from which device you switched to it and whether you are satisfied with this step.
