There are a lot of similarities between the iPhone 12 non-Pro and Pro. For the first time since 2018, when Pro and non-Pro models first appeared in the iPhone lineup (in 2018, non-Pro was called iPhone XR, and Pro was called iPhone XS), Pro and non-Pro are almost identical in appearance. They have so much in common that it makes sense to start with a story about what they have exactly the same. To not repeat.
How iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are similar
Case with flat edges painted in its color. Case dimensions 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm. OLED screen (actually AMOLED, but Apple is silent about this), with a diagonal of 6.1 inches and a resolution of 2532 x 1170 (460 pixels per inch). 2,962,440 pixels, but not all of them are available to the user. The shape of the screen is a rectangle with rounded edges, in its upper part there is a cutout, also known as a “bangs”. But still a lot. Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, the vertical screen fits two to three lines of text more.
The screen in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is protected from damage by a ceramic shield (Ceramic Shield), jointly developed by Apple and Gorilla Glass. The screens are protected from fingerprints by an oleophobic coating. 2,000,000:1 screen contrast, True Tone, P3, and more supported. The screens of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have the same maximum screen brightness when viewing HDR content (1,200 cd/m2) but normal for the iPhone 12 (625 cd/m2) and iPhone 12 Pro (800 cd/m2) / sq.m) different. The screen of the Pro is indeed noticeably brighter.
The Pro and non-Pro have the same chip, the Apple A14 Bionic. Its central processor has six cores, of which two are productive, and four are energy efficient. Exactly the same battery, Haptic Engine and many other components. The iPhone 12 Pro has more stuff, and the non-Pro iPhone 12 has plastic plugs in the places where it is located in the Pro. And even those components that are different (RAM and flash memory modules) are outwardly indistinguishable.
According to Apple tradition, when ordering an iPhone, the user can only choose the amount of flash memory. Three options are offered for iPhone 12: 64 GB for 79,990 ₽, 128 GB for 84,990 ₽, and 256 GB for 94,990 ₽. Traditionally, for more than a year now, Apple has been criticized for the amount of flash memory in the cheapest configuration. These days, they say, 64 GB is like nothing. But, what is most surprising, it is the cheapest configurations that sell the best, and buyers do not complain. The amount of flash memory is unchangeable.
RAM in the iPhone 12 4 GB. The iPhone 12 is available in six colors – white, black, blue, green, PRODUCT(RED), and purple. The colors are pretty, but compared to the colors of the high-end flagship iPhone 12, they are kind of rustic. It seems so to me. Although, the choice of these particular colors could be influenced by the material from which the cases of the standard flagship iPhone 2020 are made. It is a durable aerospace grade aluminum alloy. Shiny silver metal. Two cameras, wide and ultra wide.
iPhone 12 Pro
Three flash memory options are offered: 128 GB for 99,990 ₽, 256 GB for 109,990 ₽ and 512 GB for 129,990 ₽. You cannot change the amount of flash memory. 6 GB of RAM. The fact that RAM is one and a half times more than in the standard iPhone 12 is felt – when many applications are running at the same time, switching between them is faster. Four colors: graphite, silver, gold and pacific blue.
One of them, golden, is special. All four colors are unusual and aristocratic. The material from which the iPhone 12 Pro cases are made is surgical grade stainless steel. There are three of them in the camera system: ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle and telephoto. Next to them is LiDAR. It is used, for example, for focusing cameras, the Roulette application and more. And this is just the beginning of his career.
Which iPhone is better to buy
It depends on what you need and how much you are willing to spend on a smartphone. If you want your smartphone to stand out in the first place, then the iPhone 12 Pro might be for you. Although I would advise waiting for the next iPhone. If you take a lot of photos or videos — especially if you’re a professional — the camera system in the iPhone 12 Pro and the smart camera software should suit you.
I am not an expert in this area, but professionals speak well of the iPhone 12 Pro. If you need an iPhone as a means of communication (talking on the phone, surfing social networks or instant messengers), accessing the Internet, watching videos and similar purposes, any of them will suit you, focus on your taste and the amount you are willing to pay.
