We are already used to the fact that at every presentation of any smartphone, manufacturers show us a large number of graphs and various figures that speak of cool performance. Wherein autonomy often given little time. Apple simply reports how many hours longer the novelty will work relative to last year’s model. It looks a little sad, to be honest. Chinese manufacturers at least talk about smartphone charging time.
In such a situation, users have to find out for themselves whether new iPhones work more or less compared to last year’s models. This year was no exception, so Chinese bloggers compared the autonomy of all smartphones in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 line. The result is a little surprising.
iPhone 14 – uptime
To make the result as correct as possible, Chinese bloggers compared models of the same class with each other:
- iPhone 14 with iPhone 13.
- iPhone 14 Pro with iPhone 13 Pro.
- iPhone 14 Pro Max with iPhone 13 Pro Max.
But it is not enough to make a comparison among classmates. It is also necessary to create the same conditions for this:
- All smartphones are brand new.
- Connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- The temperature in the room is 25 degrees Celsius.
- The screen brightness is set to 350 cd/m2.
- Speaker volume is set to 50%.
I am glad that users who make such a comparison understand this very well and have created just such conditions. In such a situation, the result can be considered as close as possible to the correct one, which you will achieve by using the device in everyday mode.
Under these conditions, the following applications were launched on smartphones:
- Half an hour of Douyin (an analogue of TikTok for China).
- Weibo half an hour.
- Watching videos in Full HD.
- Calls via WeChat and other activities with which the user daily discharges the battery on his smartphone.
In fact, such a set of applications looks a little strange to us. But China has always been distinguished by the fact that for almost every service we are used to, they have their own analogue. Please note that the use of other applications may differ affect the autonomy of any iPhone. After all, they have different developers and optimization, respectively, too. After all, everyone knows how a messenger from one well-known social network discharges any device on which it is installed.
The same could be true here. Only autonomy when using other applications can both decrease and increase. If you look at the result that turned out as part of this testing, you might be a little surprised. Last year’s iPhone 13 Pro Max won a landslide victory over all competitors. Its running time in the above scenario was 9 hours and 3 minutes. The full comparison looks like this:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 9 hours 3 minutes.
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – 8 hours 31 minutes.
- iPhone 14 – 7 hours 24 minutes.
- iPhone 13 – 7 hours 16 minutes.
- iPhone 14 Pro – 6 hours 47 minutes.
- iPhone 13 Pro – 6 hours 47 minutes.
As you can see, the usual flashes of the past and this year showed exactly the same result. The difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 can generally be considered an error. 8 minutes doesn’t seem like a significant difference. But 32 minutes between Pro Max versions is already more than a serious start.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Processor
Most interestingly, Apple claims that iPhone 14 Pro Max should last one hour longer in video playback than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. 29 hours versus 28. The rest of the autonomy of smartphones, according to the Apple website, is exactly the same.
However, there is another point to watch out for. The new firmware uses Apple A16 processor, which is manufactured using a 4nm process. In turn, the Apple A15 is installed in the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is manufactured using a 5nm process technology. The fact that the A16 is manufactured using a more modern process technology should have made it more energy efficient. This is what many users were waiting for, hoping to get increased autonomy in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max precisely because of this.
But, apparently, the miracle did not happen. And if regular iPhone 14 Pro works at the level of last year’s model, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is far behind its predecessor. Half an hour is, of course, not a deafening difference, but in some scenarios this may be enough for the smartphone to be left without a charge at the most necessary moment.
In fact, this test once again confirms the fact that last year iPhone 13 Pro Max no worse than new products and is the best choice right now. The only thing it doesn’t have is newfangled Dynamic Island and 48 megapixel camera. But it is possible that it is the island and shooting at maximum resolution that do not allow iPhone 14 Pro Max show the result at least at the level of last year’s models.
